Renowned music critic Subbudu rightly said, `Music runs in their blood, they must have played music even when they were in their mother’s womb’. Called the Queens of Violin, sisters Dr M. Lalitha and M. Nandini inherited musical talent from her family. Choosing an instrument that may be just another accompaniment in India but is considered the king of instruments around the world, Lalitha says, “I belong to a violin family .“

She goes on to add, “I think it runs in our blood. I remember how my mother when she used to play, My sister and I would pull the strings, and my grandfather knew that we had the same passion for music as my family did.“ Producing spellbinding music every time they step on to a stage, Lalitha thinks it’s all because of their guru Sathguru Shrimath Santhananda Swamigal. “It’s by our guru’s grace that we provide such divine music,“ she adds humbly .

Having learnt music from the tender age of three, Lalitha adds, “I started at three and learnt how to play the violin as well as vocals. As for Carnatic music, vocals is important, but the passion drove me and I ended up playing the instrument later.“ Exploring various genres of music, the vio lin sisters have gone on to perform Indian classical, western classical, world music and fusion. “My parents K. Muthuswamy a n d Subbulakshmi Muthuswamy supported us in exploring various genres and different idioms of music.
Fusion today is great. Even the so called traditionalists are collaborating and producing `creative’ music.“

Talking about collaborations, the softspoken violinist says, “I met Miguel Czachowski two weeks earlier in Coimbatore. He in Coimbatore. He is a great musi cian, our concert together will show the colours of the world through our music -mainly Flamenco guitar.“ Capable of taking over the stage with her experience to produce soulful music, Lalitha signs off say ing, “I am not ner vous anymore when I take the stage. But the feeling to perform well and reach the audience is always there. RadioOne brought the idea of this collaboration to us and it was wonderful. At present our school MS ( M u t h u s w a m y Subbulakshmi) Academy of Global Music is an emerging hub for global music.“
