Carnatic artists stay in tune with fusion music

Chennai: There were a couple of Spanish numbers, a few Chinese pieces and some Bulgarian songs. The venue was Sri Krishna Gana Sabha and the audience lapped them all up and stayed back for some old Hindi film songs and Carnatic classical pieces as well at a recent music programme.
    “The
same set of people who enjoyed the world music pieces sang along when the film songs were played by Embar Kannan and group,” says veena player Rajhesh Vaidhya, who will perform at the same venue on Thursday with sitar player Purbayan Chatterjee. As Chennai is renewing its interest in music from across the world, more Carnatic musicians are giving fusion concerts.
When vocalist Aruna Sairam performs at Music Academy on Saturday, she will be singing a few Gregorian chants to show the similarities between classical music’s raga system and Europe’s liturgical music tradition. For Sairam, the performance is about drawing inspiration from international artists she has worked with.
Vaidhya says he loves jamming with different musicians. “When you perform classical numbers, you have to stick to the composition. But in fusion I can create and put my stamp on it,” he says.
And this is something that audiences like, say musicians. “People want to listen to something new,” says M Lalitha of Lalitha-Nandini violin duo. The sisters have been collaborating with foreign musicians and composing their own music since the 1990s. However, there are ground rules that Lalitha and Nandini stick to. “We don’t play Carnatic compositions when we do fusion concerts. Instead, we compose music based on Carnatic ragas and try to bring in elements of other musical styles,” says Lalitha.
So when they collaborated with jazz saxophonist George Brooks for the Chennai Global Music Festival, the plan was to play some kharaharapriya raga which corresponds to the Dorian mode in Western style. “We started off by sticking to our plan but ended up playing impromptu music,” says Lalitha.
The sisters faced criticism for not sticking to the traditional format but now some of their detractors are going the fusion way, says Lalitha. According to Vaidhya, people are looking for variety due to their exposure to world music.
