THEY BATTLED IT OUT!
The month of Margazhi might have just gotten over, but the flavours of the season with its Carnatic streak blossomed at the Times Thyagaraja Awards. The event showcased the best of talents in the city.
The on-stage competition was fierce as the judges asked most contestants to first outline the raga they were planning to sing.Once that was done, the contestants took to their chosen keerthanai and presented it in the best way possible.
Dr Lalitha tested the theoretical knowledge of the participants, even as she grilled them on the intricacies of the raga they sang in.What are the characteristic phrases of Shanmukhapriya, the violinist asked a contestant, who immediately sang the arohanam/avarohanam of the raga and proceeded to present its distinct features.
The judges posed hypothetical questions to the contestants (sample : which kriti would you chose as your main piece in a one-hour concert) to test their decision making skills.
